Don Pippins bio
Don was born and raised in Louisiana and as an adult, traveled extensively with his job. This has given him exposure to many different versions of bluegrass music. Getting hooked on Bluegrass in 2000, Don developed a strong traditional rhythm guitar and in 2005 purchased his first mandolin. As with any musician, he is now with his third and final Kimble F5 mandolin and it is a dandy. Don sings lead & tenor harmony vocals and has a good understanding of how the music is supposed to sound. We all have opinions and Don’s is that there is no better person to learn the art of singing harmony from than Doyle Lawson.
Don has developed quite the art of locating talented pickers wherever he may be, allowing him to have played with several local bands in the towns in which he has worked/lived. Most notable: Whitemud Drive, Edmonton, AB; Yeehaw Junction, Charleston, SC; Crossing Borders, Cincinnati, OH; Buckeye Ridge, Cincinnati -- to name a few.
As a founding member of Scattered Grass, Don sings lead and tenor along with adding a traditional mandolin sound to the group. He pushes everyone in the group to have tight harmonies first and then allow the music to flow.
Did I mention that Don travels a lot? Don currently resides in Charleston, SC with his wife Anita and is on a work assignment in Tucson. After getting tired of continually having business cards printed, he finally named his home town as: “Could Be Anywhere, USA”. Don is a believer and considers it a blessing to have traveled, met and made music with so many in so many places.
